Speaking Session

To the extent possible, insert speaking sessions in class - once in a while in Module 1 and more often in Module 2. By Module 3, slowly try to promote the conduct of the general class proceedings itself in English. If that succeeds and most of the class is able to follow, then directed speaking sessions may be fewer, else it needs to be continued at good frequency.

The selection of the topic for discussion in the speaking sessions is dependent on the representative age, background etc of the class. To the extent possible, pick up a topic that is well-understood by the class and which is more suited for constructive discussion than sharp debate.

Points of caution

• Ensure that a single student does not go on talking indefinitely.
• Try to specially include and promote slow and reluctant speakers.
• Try not to contribute 'your' points and positions. If needed, you may trigger more points from them by asking leading questions.
• Refrain from grammatical correction during speaking sessions. If a speaker says something which is highly jumbled, then you may paraphrase it before continuing further.
