About
IIT-Kanpur
"''When I
came to Kanpur first to join as the Director of the Institute,
almost everybody I met in Kanpur asked me..if I had wanted to
commit professional suicide, I did not at all worry about this
because I was no longer myself but an instrument of a historical
process" (Extracts from the
convocation address given by Dr.
P.K. Kelkar on 1981 May 17). Dr. P. K. Kelkar did the
registration of IITK Society on 14th December, 1959.
Soon after
the five IITs were set up, Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal
Nehru had realized that to keep pace with the ever changing
world of science and technology, it is necessary to collaborate
closely with the outside world. The Kanpur Indo-American
Programme (1962-1972) at IIT-Kanpur was a stride in this
direction. During the period 1962-72, the Institute received
technical assistance under
KIAP from a consortium
of
nine leading Institutions
of USA. ...........
Indian
Institute of Technology, Kanpur is one of the premier
institutions established by the Government of India. The aim of
the Institute is to provide meaningful education, to conduct
original research of the highest standard and to provide
leadership in technological innovation for the industrial growth
of the country.........."''

About
ISAMPE
The
Indian Society for Advancement of Materials and Process
Engineering (ISAMPE) was founded in the year 1985 under the
visionary leaderships of Prof. AK Rao (Founder President) and
Shri Vijay Zaveri (Founder Secretary), with the aim of bringing
together a national pool of scientists, engineers,
industrialists and academicians from the materials and process
community under a common umbrella. This year, the Society is
celebrating its 25th anniversary with the same zeal,
quest and sincerity. It has grown from strength to strength over
the past two and a half decades, both in terms of its membership
as well as its spread, reach and impact. Today, ISAMPE is more
than 1250 members strong, with six active chapters spread across
the length and breadth of the country viz. Bangalore, Coimbatore,
Hyderabad, Kanpur, Pune and Thiruvananthapuram. Over the years,
ISAMPE has also conferred Honorary Memberships to a few
distinguished scientists and technologists like Dr. Raja Ramanna,
Prof. UR Rao, Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam, Prof. AK Rao, Prof. CNR Rao,
Dr. CGK Nair, Dr. Kota Harinarayana, Dr. RA Mashelkar, Dr. VK
Aatre and Dr. VS Arunachalam. The Society also extends its
footprint to the students of materials technologies through
Student Chapters in academic institutions.
Each of the ISAMPE Chapters has been promoting the cause of the
Society through various initiatives and activities of their own,
including workshops, invited lectures, seminars, training
sessions etc. These apart, a highly successful series of
national level conferences named ISAMPE National Conference on
Composites (INCCOM) had also been successfully organized by the
Chapters in rotation and today the INCCOM conference is a much
awaited annual event of the Society, bringing together a huge
number of like-minded people from India and abroad on a common
platform. The National Aerospace Laboratories, Bangalore has set
up a fund with ISAMPE; “NAL Endowment for Composites Technology,
Advancement and Research” (‘NECTAR’) with the objective to
promote R&D activities in computational, experimental and
theoretical aspects of composite materials and technologies and
allied disciplines including smart materials and structures.
The
Annual General Meeting of the Society had always been an event
in itself. The annual ISAMPE Awards; recognizing scientists and
technicians from R&D, academia and industry; are conferred
during this event. ISAMPE also organizes theme based technical
sessions during the AGM and invites highly specialized lectures
from subject experts for the occasion. Further, from the year
2006, the Society instituted a prestigious series of annual
lecture in memory of its Founder President Prof. AK Rao and also
constituted Prof. AK Rao Memorial fund for the same.
ISAMPE has stepped into the Silver Jubilee Year with a stronger
resolve to reach out to the community and bring materials and
process engineering in the country to the fore. In this regard,
the Society has decided to undertake a number of major
initiatives this year to commemorate the special occasion; and a
few of them are listed below:
1.
National Conference on Smart and Electronic Materials: Organized
by Amrita VishwaVidhya Peetam jointly with ISAMPE Coimbatore
Chapter (Oct 2009)
2.
QIP
Course (Theme: Carbon Nanotubes and Carbon in Nanotechnology):
Organized by ISAMPE-Kanpur Chapter (Feb 2010)
3.
National Conference on Recent Advances in Composites
(NCRAC-2010): Co-organized by ISAMPE-Hyderabad Chapter (Mar

Bangalore (Jan 2011)
ISAMPE invites all professionals from the industry, R&D and
academia to participate in these activities and provide their
valuable support to march ahead towards the common
goal.
