The introduction of the elective course, Bioinorganic Chemistry (CHM 646) was made as back as in 1979 before the universal recognition of this branch as one of the sub-discipline in chemistry. Since then IIT/K has developed a strong teaching - cum research base in bioinorganic chemistry.

Besides teaching general chemistry (CHM102, CHM 201, basic courses of UG students of large classes with strength around 400) and inorganic chemistry (CHM 341, basic bonding models, chemical forces, main group, inter-halogen, noble gas compounds, coordination chemistry, bondingtheories, organometallic chemistry, introduction to catalysis) CHM441 (prerequisite CHM341, principles of modern inorganic chemistry of non transition metals).

CHM442 (prerequisite CHM441 unifying features in transition metal chemistry, description of chemistry of transition elements), CHM 642 (an advanced course, mechanisms of inorganic reactions and legend field theory) CHM 648 (metal –carbon bond, application and homogeneous/heterogeneous catalysts), CHM649 (The inorganic chemistry of elements), CHM687 (chemistry of polyhedral clusters and metal-metal multiple bonded compounds), taught bio-systems (CHM 481 basic biology, proteins, nucleic acids, membrane structure and function, glycolysis, TCA cycle, oxidative phophorylation, oxygen binding proteins, genetic code, transcription, translation, genetic engineering, cloning, sitedirected mutagensis, biotechnology). Innovative laboratory experiments in relevance to B.Tech. (CHM 101L, laboratory training with organic, inorganic and physical chemistry principles) (CHM343, analytical principles with spectroscopy, chromatography, pH, conductivity, electrophoretic separation experiments). (CHM 443, synthesis of air unstable complexes, forensic experiments, spectroscopic technique like IR, Raman, NMR, EPR, Mass, Magnetism, electrochemistry).

Analytical classes have regularly been updated and modified based on the recent development in science with the use of local infrastructure facilities.
