Homework 1

Eyeglasses and Dumbbells

Dumbbell

The shown caption for the image was "dumbbell". The ratio of the length of the connecting line to the average diameter is approximately 1.
Consciously I remembered the 3 sets of images and 3 sets of words (captions) as separate chunks. Therefore, whatever effect there was due to the captions was sub-conscious.

Words starting with k vs Words that have k as the third letter

Words starting with k vs Words that have k as the third letter

The words in the box are the words with 'k' as the third letter. The words below that are words beginning with the letter 'k'.
Even though there are 6 words that I managed to write in both categories, it is still less than the "approximately two-to-one ratio" by which words with 'k' as third letter outnumber words beginning with 'k' as claimed by Kahneman here. Another thing to note is that many words with k as third letter are of the same "kind" (bike and like...fake,cake and bake). I was also aware of this particular bias prior to the experiment which could have led to writing down more words with k as third letter than I would have otherwise.

Tongue Taste Sensation

Tongue taste sensation

The middle of the tongue is incapable to detect sweet and salty tastes. The tip of the tongue is the most sensitive area for these tastes followed by the side edges.
In two of the subjects there was some difficulty in recognizing salty tastes near the edges as compared to sweet tastes. (Although this could also be due to differences in concentration of salt and sugar solution.)
