People who could work with me or my colleagues, and what we can offer them

1)      Postgraduate students (MTech and PhD): Postgraduate students get scholarships and degrees, and interesting jobs within engineering. MTech students (through GATE) mostly come here for industrial jobs. Some want to continue for higher studies, in India or abroad. So far, I have had good luck with my masters students: all who wanted jobs got them except for one, who got one within about a month of graduating. Several students have gone on for PhDs. PhD students may want teaching jobs, industry jobs, or foreign postdoc opportunities. My goal, within academic quality constraints, is to serve the career goals of the student.

2)      Foreign postgraduate students: Not very common. Send me email with details, and we can see what is possible. You may have to arrange your own funding.

3)      Project staff: Sometimes I need project staff to work on research problems or experiments, or to assist in administrative work or in preparing documents. Sometimes, other faculty members need such staff as well. If you have a strong skill that you think we can use, send me email.

4)      Postdocs: Finishing your PhD and do not have a foreign postdoc yet? IIT Kanpur has positions (look here). The monthly stipend is good. I will be very interested if you have prior experience of publishing in good journals. You could make a short stay here, write some papers (with or without me), and then move on. Just do not expect to be a PhD student all over again. I have had 4 postdocs so far. The most successful was Sourav Rakshit, who had already got his PhD from IISc and spent some time as a postdoc at UNCC. He just spent a few months here before getting a job at IIT Madras, so my contribution to his career was small. But we wrote a nice paper on a generalization of Newtonian restitution (see my CV).

5)      Good at technical English? Students writing theses and papers often need serious editorial help. This is the largest bottleneck in my professional life, and one over which I have almost no control. If you can help, I will find some money for it. This could lead to steady flexible-hours work under gentle conditions and pleasant terms, for the right person. Email me to set up an interview.
