Professor Herbert H Uhlig, who was Professor of Metallurgy at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge, Massachusetts visited IIT Kanpur for two months in the fall of 1965. Professor Uhlig presented four lectures each week in a metallurgy course, plus seminars in seven other departments and labs, and made an inaugural address on a national symposium on Corrosion organized at IIT Kanpur.
Professor Mars G Fontana, who was Professor and Chairman of the Department of Metallurgical Engineering at the Ohio State University in Columbus visited IIT Kanpur in February 1972. He taught some classes of the Corrosion course. He constituted an award to be given to the Best Student of the Corrosion course and the award has been named the MARS G FONTANA AWARD. This is awarded annually during the convocation ceremony.
