Smart Materials are being developed since last decade in the laboratories all around the world. Many such materials have shown useful and exotic properties which can be exploited for developing sensors and actuators. Modernization in automotive and power industries, on the other hand, is generating growing demands for developing specially tailored sensors and actuators.

Nuclear plants, for example, are seeking high temperature and radiation-safe sensors to handle the green pellets. Thermal power plants also require smart materials for boiler and transformer health monitoring. In the automobile sector, smart sensors are more welcome due to their less energy requirement and suitability of integrating such sensors into the driving and steering mechanisms. Smart materials technology has recently found several useful applications in the areas of design of new surgical systems. Sensitization of different crimping and holding mechanism are becoming major issues in handling soft tissues.

Tailoring the gamut of smart materials towards these industrial applications is still a major challenge to the researchers and engineers involved in this field. This workshop intends to address this issue bringing together the experts from the industry, academia and other R&D organizations involved in this field.

Proceedings of the workshop will be available in both CD and printed format. The modalities of dissemination are being processed.
