 Student Feedback on BTP

INTRODUCTION

B.Tech. Project (BTP) is an integral part of UG education at Civil Engineering department. A student registers for BTP generally in her 7th semester as a zero credit course CE491. The student completes her BTP in 8th semester by crediting the course CE492, which is a 4 credit course.

Around a month before the pre-registration in 6th semester the students are asked to meet the faculty members to discuss the possible BTP topics and choose their supervisor. It is desirable that before a student pre-registers she should have a topic allotted and also a faculty member should have agreed to supervise her. At present students in groups of two or three generally take up one project. In some cases it may be a single student also doing one project. The topics range from design work to pure research works.

The students begin working in 7th semester and are expected to meet the supervisor regularly. The core idea is to cover the required theoretical background for the actual work. The students are examined in November where they are supposed to present their work proposal and also clearly outline the goals sought and methodology to be adopted. The students are encouraged to complete some of their actual work also in this semester though they are not examined for the same.

In 8th semester the students conduct the actual experiments, design, analysis, development etc. which forms the core of their BTP. Students are examined in a mid-semester examination (February) to assess the progress of work and also to fine-tune their goals. In the end semester examination (April) the students are examined for entire project work.
