Instructions for short course attendees
IMPORTANT: please read the instructions below
carefully. Read them not once, but twice. If you make note of
all the given information, it will make your visit to IITK far more
comfortable. If possible, you can print this document and carry it
with you during your travel.
From the Railway Station to IIT Kanpur
- If you have given us information about your exact arrival
schedule (by train or bus), then you can expect
a taxi arranged by us for pick-up. Depending on the arrival
time of your train/bus, you may have to wait a while. You will
have to exit the train station on the platform 1 side to
meet the taxi-wala. The taxi-wala will hold a placard with
IIT-Kanpur written on it (the travel service is Yadav travel
service).
- We will send you an separate email regarding your
pick-up so that things are very clear. If you do not
receive such an email by 05 May 2005, it means that we do not have
your arrival information with us, and you have to come to IITK
on your own, as explained below.
- If you have not sent us your arrival schedule so far (05 May), we
will not be arranging a pick-up for you, and you are on
your own. You will have to come by auto to IITK as mentioned
below.
- In case your train has undue delay (several hours), the taxi may
not wait for you, especially if it is also picking up other
participants arriving by train.
- In case you miss the taxi (or if you have not given us your
arrival information), or if you do not wish to wait for the
taxi, then you will have to take an auto on your
own. The nominal rate for travel from the railway station to
IITK by auto is Rs. 100 (plus probably Rs. 5 for prepaid charges
if the policeman is standing at the exit to the railway
station). We will not be able to reimburse this auto
travel expense.
- If you are arriving by auto, the auto-wala has to get a pass at
the IITK gate. For this, you will have to provide your
information as well. You can tell them that you will be staying
at Hall-5 (men) or the Girl's Hostel (women) for attending the
short course. Non-QIP participants will be staying at the
Visitor's Hostel.
- QIP participants should preserve their tickets for
travel reimbursement.
- A map of some relevant places within campus is available
here [jpg] [pdf]. You may print it for your
convenience (you will be provided with a copy of this map when
you arrive at the hostel anyway).
On arriving at the Girl's Hostel or Hall-5 or the Visitor's Hostel
- Among the QIP participants who requested for accommodation (most
participants), ladies will be staying at the
Girl's Hostel, and gentlemen will be staying at Hall-5.
Non-QIP participants will be staying at the Visitor's Hostel.
If necessary, please use the map above to get to your place of
stay.
- Note: if you arrive on the 7th, you may find that the taxi/auto
does not enter IIT from the main gate, since it will be under
repairs on that day. In any case, the map should be of help, in
case the taxi/auto does not know how to reach your hostel.
- Those going to the Visitor's Hostel (VH) can collect the key
from the office there at the entrance, which will be open 24
hours.
- Women staying at the Girl's Hostel (GH) can collect the key from
the GH office. If you arrive at a time when the office is
closed, you can collect the key from room number B-213. In case
of any problems, please contact 98390-84301, or one of us from
an internal phone: 8801, 7588, or 7190 (add 0512-259 before
these numbers if you are calling from an external phone). The
security at the hostel should be able to tell you where an
internal phone is available.
- Gentlemen staying at Hall-5 can collect the key from the hostel
office. If you arrive at a time when the office is closed, you
will find a note on the office door saying where you have to
collect your key from
(it will be from one of the rooms in Hall-5 itself). In case of
any problems, contact 93368-17021, or one of us from an internal
phone: 8801, 7588, or 7190 (add 0512-259 before these numbers if
you are calling from an external phone). The security at the
hostel should be able to tell you where an internal phone is
available.
- When you collect your room key, also collect your orientation
packet. This will contain things such as a print-out of the map
above, the short course agenda, etc. Those few participants who
are not staying at any of
the three hostels, can collect the orientation packet when they
come for the lecture on 9th morning.
- In the GH and Hall-5, the rooms do not come with bedding. For
your convenience, we have arranged bedding as well as a
bucket/mug for you in your room. Please be sure to
return these along with the room key when you leave.
- You will be eating at the mess of the hostel where you are
staying. You will have to sign in the register at the entrance
of the mess before eating.
- Non-QIP participants have to bear their boarding/lodging
charges. For QIP participants, the expense of stay for five
nights and food for five days will be reimbursed by QIP. Any
cost of additional stay/food has to be borne by individual
participants.
Classes, labs
- Classes begin on 9th morning at 9am at the Lecture-Hall-Complex,
class-room number 5 (LHC-5). Please be on time: plan to arrive
10 minutes earlier, since you will likely take time to find the
exact location.
- The labs on Tue and Wed will be at the Computer Centre (CC).
The labs on Fri will be at the Media Lab Asia.
- Please refer to the map above for these locations.
Miscellaneous
- You may wish to carry an umbrella with you to cope with the
summer heat.
- Some useful locations are given on the map: shopping centre,
state bank, STD booth, fruit vendors. There is also an STD
booth at the entrance to the Visitor's Hostel.
Contact Information
- Contact numbers in case of any emergency/problem:
(0512) 259-8801 (Res), (0512) 259-7588, (0512) 259-7190. From
an internal phone within campus, you will have to dial the last
four numbers.
