English Proficiency Programme
Reading Session
The selection of the text (preferably a small story) is dependent on
the representative age, background etc of the class. Preferably pick
up a story which does not preach a moral. Even if the story
has a moral, it will be better not to extract it in the class.
The process:
- Starting from one corner of the class, get one sentence read by
each student.
- As a student reads a sentence, he is asked to explain its meaning
to the class. If he falters, he is helped out.
- Do not linger on any sentence for long. Quickly move forward -
to the next student, with the next sentence.
- After the story ends, read out the entire story to the class once
more in a uniformly audible voice. (This will compensate for any
text missed due to reading fault of individual students.)
Optionally, if a C.W./H.W. is due and if you consider appropriate,
you may ask the students to write a summary of the story.
