 Almost all major international airlines fly to India. Main  entry points are New Delhi,  Mumbai (earlier called Bombay), Chennai (earlier called Madras), Kolkata (earlier called Calcutta). New Delhi is the closest  to Kanpur (about 262 miles or 420 Kilometers).

Travel to Kanpur:

There are several permutations listed below, hope they do not confuse you too much. Contact us if something is not clear. We wish you an enjoyable trip to Kanpur.

The common airport for Kanpur and Lucknow is at Lucknow.  From outside India, most of you will arrive at the Indira Gandhi International Airport, New Delhi. Delhi and New Delhi mean the same city.

Foreign exchange counters at the  Indira Gandhi International Airport, New Delhi operate 24 hours every day. Two of such counters are located near the baggage claim area of the airport and a few of them can be found after the customs clearance gate. Current foreign exchange rates are:

1 US $ = INR 44 (Indian Rupees, Rs.)

1 Euro = INR 54

For the travel frpm  Indira Gandhi International Airport, New Delhi to the New Delhi railway station, it is recommended that you take a pre-paid taxi which are authorised by Delhi Police. There is a pre-paid taxi counter operated by the Delhi Police itself which is located just outside the arrival lounge. Some pre-paid taxi counters canalso be found just after the customs clearance gate.

 By Air to Kanpur

If your flight from Delhi to Lucknow is early in the morning, then, after custom clearance, take a free shuttle to the domestic airport and catch your flight to Lucknow. The flight is of about 1 hour duration. The Lucknow airport is about 80 km (50 miles) from Kanpur. A taxi, at approximately Rs. 1100 ($ 25) will get you to I.I.T. Kanpur in approx. 2 hours. These are pre-paid taxis; you will pay at the booth at the airport and get a receipt. Give that receipt to the driver after reaching Visitor's Hostel of I.I.T. Kanpur, where your stay has been arranged.

By Train to Kanpur (recommended only for those landing in New Delhi):

Over 25 trains connect New Delhi to Kanpur, all have air-conditioned coaches too. Moderate one-way fares range from Rs. 700 to Rs. 1200 (approx. $16 to $27) in air-conditioned coaches depending upon the level of comfort desired. Trains take from 5 to 7 hours depending upon the number of halts they make. These trains are recommended

Shatabdi has chair cars (only sitting) while the rest have sleepers, bedding provided. In 2AC, there are two sleeping births on one side and 3AC has three sleeping births on one side.

For train tickets, there are counters at the New Delhi Railway Station. However, advance train reservation is strongly recommended. Train bookings can be done  up to 60 days in advance of the travel.

If you need the ticket in advance, please include the price of the ticket plus Rs.100/- as the service charge in the Registration fee. We will arrange to send you the ticket by postal mail if you make a request to us well in advance.

At the Kanpur Railway Station, come out through Platform No. 1 (cantonment side) and not through Platform No. 8 (city side). We will have a help desk at the Platform No. 1 for whole of the day on 3rd January 2005 and upto noon on 4th January 2004. The volunteers at the help desk  will facilitate your move to I.I.T. Kanpur by a taxi which will cost @ approx. Rs. 180 per taxi (approx. $ 4). The travel  time, by taxi, from the Kanpur Railway Station to the I.I.T. Kanpur  campus is approximately 45 minutes.
