Abstract

In developing countries majority of urban commuters don't have access to private vehicles and are dependant on public transportation. Among various means of public transportation, bus transit is the most popular because of its near door to door access-ibility, flexibility in operation and economic affordability. This study is an effort to develop efficient bus transit network routes through the application of genetic algo-rithms. Testing of the proposed routing algorithm is conducted on a benchmark route network. The results from the proposed algorithm are compared with the results ob-tained using other available techniques. Transit network routes obtained by proposed methodology outperformed the network routes obtained by existing models.
