Ganga River Front Development in Kanpur City

ABSTRACT

Ganga Action Plan (GAP) is one of the most ambitious and the first of its kind river cleaning project launched by the Government of India. The first phase of the project was completed in 1993 with an estimated cost of Rs. 462 crores. The initiation of the second phase of GAP has met with several obstacles due to wide spread criticism of some of the intervention schemes adopted and the negative public reaction. The principal objective of the present study was to critically examined some of the schemes with respect to changes in the water quality of Ganga river in Kanpur city. Past, present and future scenarios have been analysed considering two options for diversion of wastewater in Kanpur City Drainage District. The present work also discusses the impact analysis of Ganga Barrage on river front in Kanpur.
