Shopping Center

The campus has a shopping center; five minutes walk from the guesthouse, which has a variety of shops. Most of the shops are open from 10:00 --10:30 am till 8:30--9:00pm. The shops are generally closed on Sundays. It has two bookstores, 2 photocopying shops, two general stores, a medical shop, a barbershop, a sweet shop, a bakery shop, a dry cleaning shop, and a restaurant among others. If you cannot find an article you want, try also a general store.

 

 State the bank of India, post office, a telecom center, a milk bar are also nearby. A dentist and an eye specialist are available there during specific hours.

 There are a large number of shops at the gate. It is about 25 minute walk from the guest house. You can also take a rikshaw to the gate. Most of these shops are closed on Mondays however.

Bookstores

The two bookstores are open from about 9:30 am till 9:00pm. They stack a range of stationery items and books (mostly texts). Transparencies and transparency pens are available here. There is a 10 % discount on books.

Photocopying

There are two photocopying shops in the shopping center and these are open from about 10:00am till 9:00pm. The central library also has a shop. See Library.

 Library

The Institute has a Central library, which is open from 8:00am to 12 midnight on working days and Saturday. The library has been instructed to allow participants to make use of it: you may however need to show the batch).  The High Energy Physics and Mathematics books are on the second floor and the journals are on the third floor listed alphabetically. There is a photocopying shop on the third floor which photocopies on a payment basis. Second floor has electronics search facilities and also card catalogue. The library will be open from 10:00am till 5:00pm on Sunday and the photocopying unit will be closed that day.

 

Banking

The campus has branches of two national banks: the State Bank of India and the Union Bank of India. The State Bank of India has an ATM machine (possibly connected to some other cities).

Medicines

There is a reasonably good medical shop in the shopping center (Sunday closed). There are also a number of medical shops at the gate. While most of these shops are closed on Mondays, you may find an open one.

Medical Emergencies

The health center is open 24 hours a day for medical emergencies. It has been instructed to look after the health problems of the participants. Call 7777 or 7666.

Post Office

There is the post office behind the shopping center.

Telecom Center

There is a telecom center near the shopping center (left of the post office) [Hours:10am-10pm]. There is one more near security office. You can call STD/ISD and send faxes. You can call also from the faculty building ground floor.

Tickets: railway & air

There is a new rail-ticket counter of the Indian Rail at the gate.

Sita Travels which has a branch at the Shopping Center also handles both the rail and air tickets. Try 7750 to check if the office is open. City numbers are: 352948, 301435, 311458. 

 

Tickets can be made, changed, or cancelled at a counter in the Hall 7. It is opened roughly from 1:00pm to 5:00pm except Sundays. Call Suresh at 7177 to confirm. He also handles air tickets.

 

 

Snacks etc

You can get tea/coffee and snacks at (1) The Campus Restaurant (2) The SAC cafeteria both till ~ 10 pm (3) snack center near Central Library (till ~ 6 pm) (4) There is a new snack center near the Computer Center which serves hot packed food like Samosa, Pizzas, Beverages,
Croissant, Sandwiches, Frankies (open till 2 am in the night).

(5) Hall 4 canteen (behind the guest house).

 

There is a milk bar near the shopping center open from about 9am to 8:30pm.

 

Fruits/Juices: the closest place to get fruit/juice is near hall three entrance (till ~7 pm). Fruit is also available at the gate.

Transport

There are taxis available from the guest house: ask the counter. You can also book a taxi to go at a specific time: Some numbers are: 590045, 591088.

The fare to railway station is ~ 160/-. The fare to Lucknow air-port is ~ 800/-

 

Private taxis may be booked from the Visitor's Hostel for an extended period. Charges are Rs. 4.50/5.50 (Maruti van/AC Esteems ( with AC running)) per km and waiting charges are Rs 25/hour less 1 hour for journey time.

Physics Department Offices

The Department Office is on the 3rd floor of the Faculty Building. Most HEP group members have their offices on the 3rd and 4th floors.

Shopping in Kanpur

 

There are several places for shopping in the city. Kanpur is famous for leather goods

(Meston Road),  the famous Lucknow Chikan clothes and sarees ( Naveen Market and Shivalya). There is also a market in Gumti No. 5 for almost all items especially  clothing.
