PROGRAM  and  SCHEDULE

The Summer School in IIT-K will be offered over 4 weeks, followed by field research in air pollution and health.

Week 1. Urbanization and Global Sustainability will be covered in week 1 with overarching background concepts of global urban economic and population growth, human development and equity aspirations, issues of water-, energy- and materials- resource constraints, coupled with environmental pollution, global climate change and local public health in cities.

Week 2. Urban Metabolism and Environmental Footprints of Cities will be covered via the SEIS framework with concepts of urban energy/materials flow analysis (M-EFA) and life cycle assessment (LCA) applied to develop transboundary water-, energy and GHG emission footprints of cities.

Week 3. Sustainable Urban Infrastructure Design will address green design principles that promote resource efficiency, pollution-prevention and risk-mitigation in various infrastructure sectors through urban industrial symbiosis, green building design, renewable energy supply, and sustainable land-use and transportation planning.

Week 4 Infrastructures, Climate Change & Public Health will be studied through spatially delineated water- and energy use footprints that are linked with human exposure to multiple and multi-scale hazards (e.g., air pollution, water pollution, urban heat island effects, floods), and with resulting health outcomes (mortality. morbidity) among average and vulnerable populations in cities. Intrinsic and socioeconomic factors that shape vulnerability will be discussed

The students will link together the above weeks at IIT-k  to study integrated development of low-carbon,

sustainable and healthy cities. (A fifth week in Delhi will address Public POlicy and GIvernance).
