Welcome to the Deformation Processing Laboratory

The Deformation Processing Laboratory focuses on advanced thermo-mechanical processing techniques such as Equal Channel Angular Pressing (ECAP), Friction Stir Processing (FSP), Direct Powder Forging (DPF), and Rotary Swaging to enhance the mechanical performance of various materials. Our primary research interest lies in improving the properties of lightweight alloys, including aluminium and magnesium alloys, as well as high-temperature-resistant alloys such as Inconel 718. We enhance mechanical performance by tailoring microstructure and crystallographic texture through grain boundary energy minimization and precipitation hardening mechanisms. A major thrust area of our research is the development of Mg-Al-Ca alloys as a potential replacement for the conventional AZ31 wrought magnesium alloy, utilizing thermally stable precipitates instead of the commonly formed Mg17Al12 phase. Our research group has successfully employed the emerging technique of Direct Powder Forging to fabricate large-scale, near-net-shape Al components suitable for industrial applications. In the field of lightweight alloys, we have conducted extensive studies on Al-Ce-Sc alloys, achieving excellent mechanical performance at elevated temperatures. These efforts address the growing demands of the aerospace and automotive industries, including the development of processing maps for hot working of Al-Ce-Sc alloys. In addition, our research focuses on grain refinement and enhancement of strength-ductility balance in advanced aluminum alloys. The laboratory is also involved in additive manufacturing for aerospace and advanced material applications. Interested and motivated candidates are welcome to contact us for further discussion and collaboration.
