About us
The High Performance Computing Laboratory (HPCL) at the Aerospace Engineering Department of Indian Institute of
Technology, Kanpur was started by Prof. Tapan K Sengupta and ever since has been an active place of research from
its inception in 1990. The emphasis of research is on developing high accuracy computing methods to aid in bridging
the gap between theoretical and computational fluid dynamics and heat transfer. Among many achievements, solution of
turbulence problem should be viewed as the main goal achieved. Tapan K. Sengupta , Ph.D. ( Georgia Tech.) has been involved in research and teaching scientific computing for
fluid flow and wave phenomenon for more than two decades in India and abroad. His interest is in developing numerical
techniques for high accuracy computing and HPC of transitional and turbulent flows, and high resolution schemes for
compressible flows and problems of atmospheric sciences. Theoretical fluid mechanics continues to be the area of
primary interest. Latest Updates Awards, Fellowships and other Recognitions of Prof. T. K. Sengupta Contributions Outside the Institute

[A1] "Fundamentals of CFD" (2004) published by Universities Press, Hyderabad, India.A Review: This book aims to provide a foundation to CFD which finds application in solving leading edge research problems. It includes both classical and recent methods of solving high Reynolds number incompressible flows. The first four chapters deal with the governing equations and discussions on ranges of temporal and spatial scales. This is followed by classical methods for PDEs, coordinate transformations and grid generation. A full chapter is devoted to spectral analysis tools developed by the author, and aliasing error which is least understood but important for DNS/LES. The last three chapters provide higher order methods, discussions on higher accuracy finite volume methods and their comparison to finite element methods. In the last chapter, applications of some of the methods highlighting the issues of unsteady and transitional/ turbulent flows are presented. The treatment of material in this book reflects the perspective of the author, developed on the basis of recent work carried out by him and his students, and is unique in that sense.
This book should be useful to anyone wishing to understand and use CFD techniques in fluid mechanics,
aerodynamics or geophysical fluid dynamics. The author has used a part of the contents of this book to teach CFD
at IIT Kanpur and universities abroad. It provides a good starting point to new researchers, graduate or senior
undergraduate students and practitioners of engineering disciplines and applied sciences.
