Bodhi is a group from
IIT Kanpur that participated in Echoes of Gitanjali, a concert featuring a 1000-member choir singing songs of
Rabindranath's Tagore's Gitanjali in unison. The concert commemorated 100 years of the publication of
Gitanjali in English, and the award of the Nobel prize to Tagore. It was held
at the Netaji Indoor Stadium in Kolkata, on July 5, 2015, and was telecast live
on national television. The programme was organized by Sangeet Bharati
Muktadhara, led by Smt. Arundhati Deb.

Bodhi members have
continued to meet since. The major goal is to explore the expanse and depth of
the compositions of one of India's greatest poets/lyricists, Rabindranath
Tagore, and to familiarize the IIT Kanpur community with various facets of his
work and philosophy behind. A regular weekly music session is held, when the
members do basic vocal riyaaz, learn/discuss and
practise songs composed by Tagore. The group is open to all residents of the
campus who nurture a passion for the works of Tagore.
Bodhi has endeavoured
to make an annual thematic presentation of Tagore's works before the IIT Kanpur
community, choosing those which would be particularly relevant to an academic
community. Well-researched original scripts have been created by Bodhi which
thread through the programs. Eight or more months in a year are spent on
exciting research, and intense, animated rehearsals. Themes of a few of the
past Bodhi programs: Confluence of Minds: Tagore-Einstein-J C Bose, Tagore's Journey in
Spiritualism, Navarasas & Tagore: A Musical
Exploration, Transcreations by Tagore.
A highlight
of every Bodhi presentation has been the projection on screen of an
English translation of the script including dialogues/poems and songs, all
along the show. This has facilitated breaking of the language barrier and
comprehension by the non-Bengali population in the community, as verified by
the large presence of such members in the audience at each Bodhi event.
