Hosting Home Page
Eligible users including faculty members, students, researchers and academic staff may host their webpages on home.iitk.ac.in.
First of all you will have to request for your homepage directory to be created to Mr. Prajwal Bajpai through email (prajwalb@iitk.ac.in).
After launching the program/application of your choice, follow the steps based on the client you have choosen:
Important Notes
- WinSCP and SSH Client require installation, whereas PuTTY can be directly launched from the .exe file.
- During installation, accept the License Agreement and retain default installation options.
- Launch the program from Desktop icon or Start Menu after installation.
Points to Remember
- Use WinSCP when you want to upload, download or manage web contents through graphical interface.
- Use PuTTY or SSH Shell Client when you wish to edit content from command line.
Open a terminal in your local Linux machine connected to IIT Kanpur campus LAN.
Your local directory should contain the web contents to be uploaded.
For Uploading
Connect using SFTP:
Type yes if prompted and enter your CC password for authentication.
After successful authentication, you will be landed to your homepage directory.:
Use put/get commands to upload or download files.
For Editing or Deleting
Login using SSH:
After successful authentication, you will be landed to your homepage directory.:
Use vi editor to edit files:
Delete file:
Delete directory:
Once uploaded successfully, your homepage may be visible using:

The web contents hosted on this server are under the direct control and responsibility of the eligible users.
