Three-phase electric locomotives in Indian Railways were originally equipped with harmonic filters to meet signalling interference limits. After upgrades to IGBT-based converters, these filters experienced frequent failures and fire incidents, leading to operational restrictions and reduced fleet availability. A joint system-level evaluation with Indian Railways was conducted to assess the necessity of these filters. Simulation studies and extensive field trials confirmed compliance with EN 50238 limits even without the filters. See more
