- Dr. Shatarupa Thakurta Roy is an Associate Professor at the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur. She is associated with the discipline of Fine Arts in the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences offering courses in Art Appreciation and Criticism and History of Art. She has been jointly associated with the Design Programme at IIT Kanpur teaching courses on Design Theory, Graphic Design, and several other courses on Visual Communication. She completed her art education in Kala Bhavana, Visva Bharati Universtity, Shantiniketan followed by a PhD in Design from IIT Guwahati. She is an ardent teacher imparting drawing, rendering and visual reading skills to her students. She has her research interests in the domain of Visual Culture, Indian Folk and Minor Art, Graphic Design and Design Theory. She has conducted extensive field research in the area of narrative folk painting tradition of Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal, Orissa and Andhra Pradesh. She has published several papers and book chapters on art and aesthetics, cultural sustainability and cultural preservation. As a painter, Shatarupa has several exhibitions to her credit. Her paintings are figurative and metaphorical emphasizing visual story telling.
