INTRODUCTION

WHAT'S THE PROBLEM :

In industry the need of drawings are frequent to work with the problems. Many a times, the data associated from a big bunch and then searching after a bill of materials associated with that drawing consumes too much times and hence results in loss of man-hour and productivity. So the need was felt to overcome the conventional procedure.

The project is based on an industrial problem given by SIL (Scooter India Ltd., Lucknow). As the need was felt to use advanced CAD-CAM packages in the industry to improve the quality of the product and the productivity to compete in the global market, the management decided to change from the old conventional method of generating drawing with the aid of drafting instruments and maintaining a very long catalogue for the bill of materials.

DOMAIN :

In the present work a methodology is formulated and developed for the generation of drawing ,designing of bill of materials, and establishing an environment to have link between the two.   The drawing generated is linked with the associated database in the environment of AutoCAD. The link established is via the Part_No, i.e. the non-graphic entity that is linked in the drawing to the database is the Part_No. By this same way, The other graphic or non-graphic part can also be made as an entity for linking if required.

The  objective of our work is :

This is only to create the linking between drawing and the corresponding database. This database can be accessed by both our external database management system (dBASE III PLUS) and AutoCAD environment. From the database, we can access data for a certain drawing but we can't create another database file otherwise it can't be accessible by both external database management system (dBASE III PLUS) and AutoCAD environment. This  linked database can be modified or updated by both the same. It means any modification made in database will be reflected in both either in AutoCADR14 or dBASE III PLUS.

COMPARISON:

Earlier, The conventional procedure was to collect a drawing from a big bunch and then searching for the database associated with that  drawing consumes too much time which results in loss of man-hour and productivity. That's why need was felt to overcome this conventional procedure.

FIGURE: Manual Drawing showing a handwritten Bill of Materials. The data from this BoM cannot be uploaded directly to a database, nor will it be possible to reflect changes in the database automatically in the hand made drawing.

In industry, the need of drawing and the data associated with that particular drawing are frequent to work with the problems.  If the associated data of drawing will be retrieved at the same time without any search of related data from the bunch, It will not only save time but also make more user friendly to work with to enhance man-hour.

Here what we do is to establish the linking between drawing and the corresponding database. By this, data related with any particular drawing can be retrieved working  in the AutoCAD environment and same data can also be accessed by external database management system (dBASE III PLUS). For this we create an environment which create linking the database with AutoCAD and dBASE III. Anything modified or updated in on environment will be reflected in other environment. We also customize menu so that any drawing that is stored in AutoCAD environment can be retrieved from the pull down menu and also database corresponding to that drawing. This makes it more user-friendly and easy to handle. This really saves time to work with which increases man-hour and enhance the productivity.
