Dr. Arvind Kumar



Dr. Arvind Kumar is a Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at IIT Kanpur. Dr. Kumar received his bachelor's degree (2001) in Manufacturing Engineering from NIFFT, Ranchi, master's degree (2003) and Ph.D. (2008) from IISc Bangalore. After graduation, he worked as a postdoctoral fellow at the Ecole des Mines de Nancy, France. He has worked in France for about three years before moving to the UK as a Marie Curie Fellow at the University of Southampton.

His research work focuses on solid-liquid phase change (melting/solidification) involving theoretical work, modelling and simulation, and experiments. His research typically is in the interdisciplinary area of fluid, thermal and manufacturing sciences. In the past, Dr. Kumar has worked in academic-industry R&D environments where he has performed applied and industry-centric research. His current research involves developing through process, CFD models, and experiments focusing on additive manufacturing, welding, casting, and surface coating. The attendant multiscale transport phenomena, multiphase flow and solidification heat transfer are studied with an aim towards development of improved and new manufacturing and materials processes.

Dr. Kumar also works in the areas of thermal spray surface coating technologies, and thermal storage and waste heat recover technologies.

Solidification and Additive Manufacturing Laboratory


The main focus of the lab is on solid-liquid phase change (melting/solidification) involving theoretical work, multiscale computational heat transfer and fluid flow modelling (CFD), microstructure modelling, stress modelling, and experiments. The various research activities are in the area of metal additive manufacturing, welding, casting, coating and thermal energy storage.

The comprehensive approach of our group, that includes development and implementation of benchmarks, validations with controlled laboratory and actual industrial-scale quantitative experiments, and process qualification, has helped to acquire advanced scientific understanding, and predictive and control capability for defects and microstructure in solidification processes. The advanced robust models have been successfully applied to various melting/solidification related manufacturing processes (additive manufacturing, welding, surface coating, casting). Further, the multi-scale physical models, engineering thermal predictors and process selection guidelines have been applied to the area of thermal energy storage (waste heat and renewable energy).

  • FIST facility for Metal Additive Manufacturing (2018): Established a state-of-the-art facility for LPBF-based Metal 3D Printing
      in the ME Department.

  • Software tool for welding (2019): Simulation and prediction of heat transfer and melt flow, weld pool, defects and weld
      composition. Applicable to various welding processes including high energy density Laser and Electron Beam Welding.

  • Numerical tool for thermal energy storage system (2019): Simulation and prediction of heat storage (using phase change material
      - PCM) and cold energy storage (using ice slurry) parameters.

  • Numerical tool for surface coating using thermal spray; and HS in-situ imaging facility for droplet impact and solidification on
      surfaces (2019):
    Simulation and prediction of coating structure and morphology (e.g., TBCs). Local HS imaging and measurement
      of spreading and solidification for metal-analogue droplets impacting on surfaces and temperature measurement.
