In the second part of the thesis, turbulent Raleigh-Bénard convection, in a 6x6x1 box with periodic boundary conditions in the horizontal directions, is computed with direct numerical simulations using an explicit higher-order scheme, at Raleigh numbers of 70000, 500000, and 2000000. The computations were done on a 96 node Linux parallel cluster using MPI Fortran.

Abstract: The finite volume method has been used to solve the radiative transfer equation (RTE) and tested on a wide range of problems in 2D, 3D and axisymmetric geometries and incorporated in an in-house Navier-Stokes equation solver. Finally, three problems, involving forced and natural convection in 2 and 3 dimensions, have been selected to study the effect of radiation on flow.

"A numerical solution methodology for integrating compact thermal models of electronic packages with computational fluid dynamic simulations".

Defended May 2010.(Currently at General Electric Corporation.)

Abstract: Compact Thermal Models (CTMs) of electronic devices are integrated with CFD simulations of flow in electronic cooling applications. CTMs are resistance network models which give a very accurate representation of the thermal response of devices under different conditions. Their integration with CFD are likely to give much more realistic simulations of electronic cooling than the traditional (constant temperature and heat flux) boundary conditions commonly used.
