You must book your Hotel in Delhi if you plan to stay in Delhi. I am willing to provide you assistance in making your trips comfortable, please let me know if you need assistance.
You must carry US dollar or Euro which you must convert at Delhi airport in Indian rupees (I US $ = INR 45, I Euro is around Rs. 55).
I am giving below some of the important information.
Delhi airport
Once you clear Immigration, collect your luggage and come out from the custom area, when you come out you will find pre paid taxi counter in the left hand, one can take pre-paid taxi but it is really difficult job for the foreigners in huge crowd and also it is difficult to locate taxi. If I know your program, I can make arrangements so that you get taxi comfortably which will take you either in a Hotel or at the railway station. One should be careful also, one time one of my guests from Germany was cheated like anything!! Please remember, the Indian platforms are very crowded, not like Chineese platforms.
If I know your program, I will be happy to give you proper advice and may be I will hire someone to facilitate your trip to IIT Kanpur.
Mostly Flight arrives at mid night; at that time there is no train to Kanpur. The good trains Rajdhani and Shatabadi need prior reservation, without reservation you have to pay penalty and they will charge you double fare. Please see "How to reach Kanpur " for a list of Trains.
In Shatabadi and Rajdhani, if you have valid ticket, they will provide you breakfast, dinner. Shatabadi leaves from New Delhi station at 6.15 am and arrives in Kanpur at around 11 am. Rajdhani leaves Delhi around 4.30 pm (there are many Rajdhani during 4.30 - 5.15 pm), one must make sure to board the right Rajdhani or Shatabadi. Rajdhani reaches around 10 pm.
