We will be happy to share details on geodetic and water vapor analysis. For queries, analysis of GPS network, use of GPS data analysis results, GPS data, please send an email to "ramesh@iitk.ac.in".

If you want to use IIT Kanpur, Chitrakut and campaign station data, please properly acknowledge efforts made by PI in establishing and maintaining the site.

GPS setup at IITK Campus

A temporary GPS Antenna (Zephyr Geodetic) is set on top of CE building using Tripod. This setup is being used since acquisition of GPS in laboratory to record data. Since mid of January 2004 GPS receiver was set to record data on Compact flash data storage device during day time. Since last week of January 2004 it is configured to record data continuously on desktop PC at various rates and in multiple formats (DAT, SSF, and RINEX). Trimble Reference Station software have used for recording at user defined standard intervals. GAMIT will be used to process growing data.

GPS Hardware and software

Trimble 5700 GPS receiver is capable of receiving two frequency and supports for both real-time and post processed data collection techniques. It’s light weight, low power consuming having internal power back up of up to 10 hours using two internal rechargeable Li-ion batteries. Compact flash card data storage system (128 MB) can record data for more than 3,000 hours of continuous L1+L2 data logging of 6 SV (Satellite View) at a logging rate of 15 seconds. It can be configured to work in field with recording on flash card or in permanent base stations using desktop computer. It has USB as well as two COM port for configuration and data transfer. Three sets of GPS receiver, Zephyr antenna and other components are acquired along with laptop computer for GPS configuration in field along with one Tripod for temporary setups in field.

Zephyr Geodetic L1/L2 Antenna

It has high gain to track weak signals, better resistance to multipath and low elevation satellite tracking capability.

A number of softwares are available to configure GPS receiver for recording, upgrading its firmware, data transfer from flash card to computer, processing and analysis of collected data.

Winflash is an essential software utility to keep internal firmware at its best and updated. It’s update are available on Trimble website. All the three GPS receivers are upgraded.

GPS Configurator can be used to configure GPS receiver to record data directly on internal data storage device that is industry standard compact flash card having memory size 128 MB.  This software is essential to use GPS receiver while in field for data collection.

Trimble Data Transfer Utility is useful to transfer data between a variety of devices and desktop PC using either COM port or hot pluggable USB port.

Configuration Toolbox is another utility to configure GPS receiver to receive and record data at user specified settings. It has some advanced capabilities to setup the receiver in short time.

Trimble Reference Station (TRS) can also be used to configure GPS receiver to record data directly onto a desktop computer. Data can be recorded at length at user specified multiple sessions and in multiple format like native DAT, SSF or industry standard RINEX format. Data can also be automatically uploaded to a web server so that data is available to international community via internet.

Trimble Geomatics Office 1.50 software suite can be used for all post-processing of static or kinematic data. Base-line processing as well as other advanced survey related processing is possible. Fixed GPS base stations data can be used for post processing to achieve much better positional accuracy.

GAMIT is important freely available licensed software that can be used in processing GPS data. It runs on SOLARIS and LINUX systems and a very useful in analyzing data.
