Faq # 2: Is the Indian scientific community active in Semiconductor Nanostructures?

Question: We understand that there is a major worldwide effort in the field of Semiconductor Nanostructures. Is the Indian scientific community active?

Answer: There is considerable activity in India. This maybe gauged by the single fact that in a space of a few months this winter (2000) there are at least four conferences devoted to nanostrucutral materials:

1.
National Conference on Science and Technology of Nanomaterials and Clusters, Barkatullah University, Bhopal, India Nov. 23 -25 2000.
2.
Conference on Physics of Nanophase Materials, Pune University, Pune, Inida, Dec. 18 - 20 2000.
3.
International Discussion Meeting on Mesoscopic and Disordered Systems, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, India, Dec. 18 - 20 2000.
4.
International Conference on Science and Technology of Nanomaterials and Clusters, Institute of Physics, Bhubaneshwar, India, Jan 4 - 8 2001
The proceedings of an earlier conference devoted exclusively to semiconductor nanostructures has been published as ``Physics of Semiconductor Nanostructures'', ed. K.P. Jain Narosa Publishing House, Delhi (1997).

Our own work dates from 1994 and is mainly theoretical and phenomenological. Two review articles we would draw your attention to are:
``Porous Silicon : Theoretical Studies", George C. John and Vijay A. Singh, Physics Reports 263, 93-151 (1995). [REVIEW ARTICLE]
``Light Emission from Porous Silicon", G.C. John and Vijay A. Singh, Comments in Cond. Matt. Phys. 18 , 163-177 (1997).
