The Following 7 member team represented the country at IPhO '98 held at Reykjavik, Iceland in July 1998.

IPhO-98 Theoretical competition was held on July 4, 1998. It consisted of three theoretical problems, each of maximum points 10. IPhO-98 experimental competition was held on July 6, 1998. It consisted of two experimental problems of points 8 and 12 (Total points : 50). The competitions were of 5 hours duration each.

MEDALS and SPECIAL PRIZES to the 5 students :

Abhishek Kumar (Delhi) received a Silver medal. (He was the second highest among the 15 silver medalists.)
Vijay Bhatt (Calcutta) received a Bronze medal.
Shivi Shekar Bansal (Obra, U.P.), Dilys Thomas (Pune) and Saikat Guha (Patna) received Honourable Mentions.

Thus all the five members of the Indian Team received some medal or honour.

A highlight of the maiden India performance was receiving 3 special prizes :

IPho President's Prize : For the best performance among the participants from the new countries to Abhishek Kumar.
Organizers Prize : For the best solution to Problem No. 2 of Theoretical Competition among all participants to Vijay Bhatt. (There were three theoretical problems and for each a `Best Solution' award was given).
European Physical Society Prize : For the best balance between theory and experimant to Saikat Guha.
