Projects : Non-Linear Dynamic Inversion Technique

Development of Control Laws for different unmanned aerospace vehicles using Nonlinear Dynamic Inversion (NDI) technique is being carried out at Flight Lab, IIT Kanpur. NDI is a control design technique which is highly emerging in the field of controls of nonlinear systems. The key reason for preferring this technique is that it takes into account the nonlinearities of the system while developing the control law. Moreover NDI does not need regular gain scheduling at each and every operating point of a dedicated system. So far, NDI has been applied on Aircraft model (F-4) to control various flight conditions and perform different manoeuvres. A projectile vehicle (projectile bomb model) is continuously controlled using NDI technique so that it lands at a specified point being released with certain initial conditions. The geo stationary objective part of the stratospheric airship is achieved by applying NDI technique to control the thrust under atmospheric disturbances. NDI application has also been incorporated on a parafoil so as to make it an autonomous system by deflecting the control surfaces to land at a specified location. An altered form of NDI named as Adaptive NDI (ANDI) along with neural networks (NN) training methods is under progress to be applied on a 5 degrees of freedom Dynamic test rig so that the dynamic parameter estimation of different aircraft models mounted on test rig can be carried out accurately in wind tunnel with minimum coupling effects experienced by the model which is mounted.
