PROJECTS:

SPONSORED RESEARCH:

  1. Computation of Three Dimensional Flow Field in a Spiral Casing of a Hydraulic Turbine, Sponsored by BHEL (Bhopal), India; Other Investigators: Dr. V. Eswaran. (Status: Completed).
Flow fields in the Spiral Casing of the Hydraulic Turbines were computed using Streamline Upwind Petrov Galerkin Technique. Pressure drop, and velocity profiles at different sections were evaluated and compared with the available experimental results.

  2. Development of a Computational Fluid Dynamics Code, Sponsored by DRDL (Hyderabad), India. (Status: Completed).
This work is classified in nature Prof. V. Eswaran was the Principal Investigator (also the major contributor) of the Project.

  3. Noise Removal, Three Dimensional Reconstruction and Data Retrieval for Optical Images of Stratified Fluids, Sponsored by Department of Science and Technology (New Delhi), India; Other Investigators : Dr. K. Muralidhar (Principal Investigator). (Status: Completed).

  4. Modeling and Simulation of Enhanced Oil Recovery using Parallel Computers, Sponsored by Department of Science and Technology (New Delhi), India; Other Investigators : Dr. K. Muralidhar (Status: Completed)
In this project, simulations were performed to evaluate the efficiency of Enhanced Oil Recovery from the Porous Formation. The recovery technique was based on hot water injection at some strategic locations.

  5. Unsteady Separated Flow in the Wake of a Square Cylinder in a Channel: Numerical and Experimental Study, AR&DB, India. (Status: Completed).
In this project, the focus was to develop the most elegant way of handling turbulent transport. The Large-eddy Simulation technique was implemented in a completely innovative way. The near and far wake dynamics was predicted. The results compared well with the experimental counterpart.

  6. Application of Vortex Generators and Oval Tube to Enhance Performance Air-cooled Condensers and Other Heat Exchangers, A joint research project between Yokohama National University (Japan), Idaho National Eneregy and Environment Laboratory (USA) and IIT Kanpur, Sponsored by NEDO-Japan; Other Investigators : Dr.M.S. Sohal, Dr. J. O'Brien(Idaho National Lab, USA) and Professor K. Torii (Yokohama National University, Japan) (Status: Completed)
Air-cooled condensers are generally used in Geothermal Power Plants. The size of the condensers is enormous and the cost is nearly one third of the total Plant Cost. A joint venture was undertaken by Department of Energy of USA and NEDO of Japan to reduce the size of the condensers by enhancing the transport coefficients on the heat exchange surfaces. Significant theoretical development has been accomplished at IIT Kanpur on this project. The project is nearing completion. Some optimization studies have to be completed in next few months. This was a tripartite project between Idaho National Laboratory (USA), Yokohama National University (Japan) and IIT Kanpur (India). The project report is available on the INL website and can be accessed by anyone with web access and Adobe Acrobat software. 7. Large Eddy Simulations of Flows in A Rectangular Channel With a Built-In Winglet Pair, Sponsored by ARDB (Bangalore), India; Other Investigator: Prof. E.G. Tulapurkara (IIT Madras) and Prof. Sanjay Mittal. (Status: Completed).

  8. CFD Code for Thermal Hydraulics of Neutron Spallation Target for Accelerator Driven Sub-Critical Systems, BRNS Mumbai, India. Other Investigators: Prof. V. Eswaran and Prof. Rathish Kumar (IIT Kanpur). (Status: Completed).

  9. Developemnt of a Computer Code on Pressure Based Navier-Stokes Solver for Unstructed Meshes, Fluent India, Pune. (Status: Completed).

  10. Numerical Simulation of Heterogeneous Bubble Growth (MHRD, R&D), Govt of India (Status: Completed).

  11. Numerical and Experimental Studies on Boiling Heat Transfer for Improved Heat Exchangers sponsored by DST (under DAAD-DST Project based Exchange Programme).
