I have worked at TIFR Mumbai during 1982-2018 on the development of various space instruments and thereafter, I have joined IIT Kanpur. My research interest includes space instrumentation, Cosmic rays, X-ray astronomy, Black hole/ neutron star X-ray binaries. Accretion disk, accretion disk & radio jet connection and study of moon and meteorite samples. I have studied moon samples from Luna 16 and Luna 22 moon missions.

I have participated in the development of following space instruments:

  1. Anuradha instrument, TIFR, launched in Spacelab-3 in May 1985 (NASA).
  2. Gamma Ray Spectrometer (GRS) instrument onboard Mars Observer mission (NASA) launched in 1992.
  3. Indian X-ray Astronomy Experiment (IXAE) instrument , TIFR, (ISRO) launched in 1996.
  4. Astrosat/LAXPC instrument , TIFR, launched (ISRO) in 2015.

Large Area X-ray Proportional Counter (LAXPC) instrument is one of the major science instruments onboard India`s 1st space science observatory; AstroSat (430kg out of 750kg total weight of five AstroSat science instruments). AstroSat was launched in space on 28 September 2015 by ISRO. I have led development of LAXPC instrument as its PI during (2012-18) its crucial phase of development, space qualification tests, detector calibration, integrated satellite level tests, AstroSat launch, post launch issues, analysis software issues and finally setting up LAXPC payload operation center (POC). The LAXPC instrument is working well in space for last nine years and providing world quality data to study neutron star and black hole X-ray binaries in our galaxy. At present, it provides best capability worldwide in 3-80 keV energy range with a fine 10 microsecond time resolution. Over 100 research papers are published based on LAXPC data in refereed journals.
