Analysis of The Mizhavu from Kerala
With Prof. Anurag Gupta
An integral part of the ancient Sanskrit temple theatre
form Kutiyattam, the Mizhavu is a pot-shaped drum
which is used to provide the rhythm and emotion for
whatever's enacted on the stage. As with Prof. Gupta's earlier
pursuits with Indian musical instruments, we have recorded and
analyzed the Mizhavu, endeavouring to establish the
mechanics of production of its iconic sound.
