* OVERVIEW OF RAPID PROTOTYPING:
The term RP or RAPID PROTOTYPING is a group of new technology which made it possible to produce models and prototypes of very complicated parts from 3D CAD model without using tools or fixtures.It also allows the manufacturers to improve product quality and reduce both time to market and the cost of new lines,as part of a concurrent engineering.By this Rapid Prototyping process the prototype is polymers or sintering powders using curing media laser,heating
The advent of RP technology has been a revolutionary breakthrough in computer management like CIM process. One of the major advantages of RP technology is that no inaccuracies creep in manufacturing of model due to complete automation of process and no human interaction during the manufacturing process. In addition the necessity of jigs and fixtures and other related auxillary tools for manufacturing process are done away with.
In this process inert materials, lack of fumes ,simple operations, quite compatible with in office environment , relatively lower initial and operating cost are also some of the main advantages . Application of this technology leads to considerable reduction in total cycle time . Models for Experimental Stress Analysis are being developed through RP.
Credits to RP at CAD - PROJECT LAB at IITK include projects from industries as MARUTI, EICHER, HAL,TELCO etc.
The cost of the prototype produced is exhorbitantly high.
