About SMILE Lab

The Smart Manufacturing and Intelligent Learning Systems Lab (SMILE Lab) is at the forefront of research in advanced manufacturing, AI, and intelligent learning systems. We develop intelligent solutions to enhance productivity, optimize resources, and improve resilience in engineered systems.

Vision

Identify, develop and disseminate methods to improve the resilience and sustainable long-term performance of complex engineered systems. We apply complexity science across domains, and translate research into scalable industrial solutions.

Lab capabilities

  • Collaborative robots and industrial robots
  • Desktop hybrid manufacturing processes
  • UGVs and UAVs for experimental integration
  • AR/VR tools and IIoT electronics suite on customizable test beds
  • Workstations, visualization displays, and integration tools

Longer-term goals

Translate complexity science into practical tools and workflows for industry, improve functionally resilient designs and support cross-domain learning and industrial adoption.
