Research

A state-of-the-art design and manufacturing lab is set up with experimental apparatus such as collaborative and industrial robots; desktop hybrid manufacturing; UGVs and UAVs; AR/VR tools and an IIoT electronics suite. These are integrated on customizable test beds to study complex engineered systems. Work includes software tools linked to hardware to systematically generate complex engineered systems that display functional resilience.

Current focus

  • Computer-aided process planning for multi-machine tasks and multi-tasking machines
  • Voice-orchestrated design tools for managing products through their lifecycle
  • Functionally resilient multi-robot systems
  • Desktop hybrid manufacturing processes

Vision

The longer term vision is to improve resilience and sustainable long-term performance of complex engineered systems through new methods and cross-domain learning.

Designing the Future of Space Exploration

Exploring Design Practice through Rover Prototypes

Hands-on Innovation

Students in the design practice course collaborated in a hands-on workshop to conceptualize and build space rover models, exploring creativity, problem-solving, and prototyping skills. The film captures their process— from sketching ideas to bringing functional prototypes to life—showcasing the spirit of design innovation in action.
