Pratik Sen was born in West Bengal, India, in 1977. He received his B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees from the Department of Chemistry, Visva-Bharati University, in 1999 and 2001, respectively. He earned his Ph.D. from the Indian Association for the Cultivation of Science, Jadavpur, Kolkata, India, in May 2006. Then he moved to RIKEN, Japan, for his post-doctoral study as a JSPS fellow. Dr. Sen joined the Department of Chemistry, Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur as an assistant professor in December 2008 and became a full professor in November 2018. From 2022, he is holding the Poonam and Prabhu Goel Chair Professorship at IIT Kanpur.

His primary interest in research is to gain physical insight into how and why dynamics in various length and timescale control chemistry. The studied system ranges from small molecules (Ultrafast-Spectroscopy) to complex biosystems (Biophysical-Chemistry) and simple solutions (Solution-Chemistry). His group mainly uses ultrafast laser and single molecular level spectroscopies as a tool for this endeavour. Other research interests include carrier dynamics of perovskite nanocrystal and so forth. Further, he intends to develop new methodologies in fluorescence spectroscopy. Recently developed methods are: estimation of the actual bi-molecular electron transfer rate, adiabaticity in proton transfer step and method to probe directionality of protein digestion.

Dr. Sen has published more than 120 research articles in international journals of repute. His h-index is 29, with a citation of more than 2400. He has delivered more than 65 invited lectures in the country and abroad so far. Dr. Sen has strong collaboration in the USA, Japan and Poland. A total of 8 PhD students and 27 MSc students have graduated under his supervision. He has completed 13 national/international sponsored research projects and organized several workshops/conferences.

He has received several awards and recognition for his research, which includes, Young Scientist Medal from Indian National Science Academy (INSA), New Delhi in 2012; Young Faculty Research Fellowship from IIT Kanpur, 2015-2017; Member, Indian National Young Academy of Sciences (INYAS), 2016-2020; Young Faculty Research Fellowship, Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology, Government of India in 2018, Fellowship of the Royal Society of Chemistry in 2021 and Bronze Medal of Chemical Research Society of India (CRSI) in 2021.
