About Prof. Sen's Group

Established in December 2008, the Sen Group is located in the Core Building of the Department of Chemistry, Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur. As Feynman once said, every physical, chemical and biological phenomenon can be understood in terms of the jiggling and wiggling of atoms. This understanding is the backbone of any research field. Our group intends to gain physical insight into how such dynamics in various length and timescale control the chemistry. The studied system ranges from small molecules (Ultrafast-Spectroscopy) to complex biosystems (Biophysical-Chemistry) and simple solution (Solution-Chemistry) using established spectroscopic tools and new methodology (Methodology-Development) as needed. We routinely use steady-state absorption/emission, picosecond time correlated single photon counting (TCSPC), fluorescence up-conversion, femtosecond transient absorption and fluorescence correlation spectroscopy (FCS). As needed, we also perform small synthesis and use other techniques like nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), electronic microscopy, confocal microscopy, atomic force microscopy (AFM), dynamic light scattering (DLS), and so on. Through collaboration, we take advantage of molecular dynamics (MD) simulation, terahertz spectroscopy and optical Kerr effect (OKE) to look into our problems. Specifically, we are interested in new methodology development in fluorescence spectroscopy, excited state photo physics and relaxation dynamics, active-site protein dynamics, synergistic solvation and heterogeneity in binary solvent mixture and deep eutectic solvent. Another theme of our research group is to contemplate the changes and their underline mechanism of such phenomenon in cell mimicking environment (crowded and confined).
