The penetration of renewable energy sources has been continuously increasing at transmission and distribution system levels owing to policy changes in response to pressing environmental issues. The shift towards renewables in the energy mix poses significant challenges to power system operators tasked with maintaining system reliability. A continual balance between the supply and demand for power changes the system operations at both the transmission and distribution levels.
Our current research focus is on developing reliable and efficient Integrated Transmission and Distribution (ITD) systems using a Transactive Energy System (TES) design to accommodate the rapid rise in renewable energy sources and distributed energy resources (such as electric vehicles and battery storage systems).
Transactive Energy (TE) is "A system of economic and control mechanisms that allows the dynamic balance of supply and demand across the entire electrical infrastructure using value as a key operational parameter", defined by The GridWise® Architecture Council. The TE systems aim to achieve energy transactions through some valuation mechanism.
