About Experiment
- It is important to understand the flame spread over the solid fuels used in our day-to-day life.
- Paper can be considered as a solid fuel.
- The combustible properties of paper will differ significantly depending upon whether it is soaked with a liquid fuel or not.
- Besides this, the paper thickness will also have influence on the flame spread rate.
- In this experiment, we will try to understand the phenomena occurring during the downward propagation of flame in a solid fuel (paper).
Experimental Setup
Experimental Procedure
- The paper is clamped between the two vertical metal strips.
- The paper holder can be rotated to a desired angle.
- Once the fuel is set at a desired angle, the ignition coil is brought into contact at the top edge of the fuel surface.
- Ensure that the ignition takes place uniformly at the contact edge.
- Experiment is conducted in an enclosed chamber with an escape passage for the exhaust gases.
- A high resolution video camera is used to acquire the images.
NOTE: Flame front is identified by the blue zone behind the luminous yellow zone.
Results: images of combustion process
