Expt 6: Visualization of Swirling Flow and Flame in a Burner

Conclusions

  • Cold flow visualization reveals an increase in the jet width with swirl addition.
    • With increase in swirl number, the ambient air entrainment increases and as a result, the jet width also increases.

  • The visible flame length
    • decreases with MFR for buoyancy dominant regime (MFR = 3 – 30)
    • remains almost constant for momentum dominant regime (MFR = 30 – 80)

  • The visible flame length decreases when swirl is increased.

  • Increased swirl results in well mixed zones near burner exit and flame stabilization near burner exit.

  • Blowout limit extends with swirl number.
