Expt 10: Measurement of Spray Cone Angle and Mass Distribution by Optical Methods

Experimental Procedure

  • Obtain the water spray from a vertically mounted air-blast atomizer.

  • With properly aligned optical elements, obtain a thin LASER sheet.
    • It is vertical and passes through spray center for cone angle.
    • It is horizontal and passes through the spray at a distance sufficiently away from the primary breakup zone.

  • Set up the CCD camera and obtain images of spray;
    • Keep camera parallel to the plane of LASER sheet for cone angle.
    • Keep camera at an angle to the LASER sheet for patternation.

  • Analyze individual images and obtain averaged data for cone angle, SPI, and SUI.

  • Perform experiments for different gas to liquid mass ratio (GLR=).
