Expt 10: Measurement of Spray Cone Angle and Mass Distribution by Optical Methods

Cone Angle





  • A MatLab code is used to identify edge of spray and calculate the spray cone angle from the images.

  • Images are first converted to binary (black and white) scale and morphological corrections are applied to identify the spray regions.

  • Edge detection by Sobel algorithm identifies the spray fringe contours from which the full cone angle (a) is determined.





  • Cone angle remains fairly constant with GLR.



Optical patternation





Spray image cannot be captured from above the atomizer.

  • Image taken at an angle, ?.

  • Apply perspective correction to obtain actual image from tilted image.





      • Intensity variation across the length of gray scale image plotted at different heights from the center of the spray having intervals of 100 pixels.

      • Intensity maximizes at the spray center and decreases asymptotically.



        • Spray uniformity index (SUI)



          Spray uniformity is dictated by SUI, smaller number indicates more uniformity.
