Prospective Students
We are constantly looking for talented, motivated and dedicated people to join our lab. Rigor, hard work, integrity and some play, are characteristics of our lab culture.

Prospective PhD/MTech/MS Students

If you are a student interested in joining our lab for a PhD/MTech/MS, please first apply formally to the Mechanical Engineering Department. Recruitment for MTech/MS takes place in May and again in December of every year, and is based on a valid and competive GATE score, and sometimes followed by a written exam and/or an interview. Please monitor the departmental website for recruitment announcements.

At IITK, PhD/MTech/MS students are recruited into the Mechanical Engineering department and are then expected to select/find a suitbale advisor in their first semester. Students wanting to work with us are encouraged to reach out to the PI - Dr. Mohit Law (mlaw@iitk.ac.in) at the start of their first semester. This is important. Very. Selection of courses takes place in the first week of the semester, and selecting the right courses will help better prepare the student to carry out research in our group.

Since research in our lab is at the intersection of theory and practice, straddling the disciplines of applied mechanics and physics based manufacturing, all students (PhD/MTech/MS) keen on working with us are recommended to take some/all of following preparatory courses:

Coursework recommendations

  • ME681: Mathematics for engineers
  • ME668: Machining dynamics
  • ME730: Modal analysis: theory and practice
  • ME621: Introduction to solid mechanics
  • ME623: Finite element methods
  • ME625: Applied dynamics and vibrations
  • ME756: Principles of vibration control
  • ME850: Basic control systems for Mechanical engineers

While selecting courses, also keep in mind the departmental requirements, that can be found here.

Prospective PhD Students

If you have taken a subset of the above courses in your first semester, and want to work with us, please write to the PI - Dr. Mohit Law (mlaw@iitk.ac.in) with details about:

  • Your background (CV),
  • a research statement (what you would like to specifically work on), and,
  • a statement of purpose (what has prepared you to work with us).

Applicants not providing the above details will not be considered favourbly.

Prospective MTech/MS Students
