Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU)

All the three applications – (1) Anti Brake Locking System, (2) Traction Control System and (3) ESC System are related to measurement of inertial parameters of the vehicle and involve MEMS based sensors which perform measurements related to rate of change of momentum to monitor the stability of the automobile.

Following sensors are used in the design to monitor the various parameter of the vehicle:

  • Acceleration Sensors (for linear acceleration measurements)
  • Tilt Sensors (for angular position measurements)
  • Gyroscope (for angular velocity measurements)

IMU Set

It is a set of sensors, a micro processor, and other electronic components to help keep vehicle under control.

Uses

Uses of IMU developed at IIT Kanpur other than this project are:

  • Derailment Detection Device: Currently we are using one IMU as derailment detection device. To know more details about this project please click on the link: Derailment Detection Devices
  • Satellite (IITK Nano Satellite): GPS satellite navigation to maintain accurate positional information. By attaching gyroscopes which measure angular speed the antenna can determine the direction and velocity of vehicle rotation very accurately.
  • Tilt sensor: When working with very low frequency inertial measurement units can be used as tilt sensor.
  • Earthquakes Detection: Bulky accelerometers with large masses and soft springs would have very small natural frequencies, this kind of accelerometers can be used as a seismometer to detect earthquakes.
  • As train detector for Unmanned Railway Crossing.
