Expt 3: Numerical Characterization of Laminar Premixed Methane-Air Flames

Mathematical model of a premixed flame

    Assumptions:
  • One dimensional steady subsonic flow.
  • Properties of component gases depend upon temperature.
  • Ideal gas behavior is valid for all the gases.
  • Flame is freely propagating.
  • No heat losses by radiation occur from the flame.

    Model:
  • Governing equations of continuity, momentum, energy, and species are written.
  • Chemical kinetics is modeled using a readymade mechanism called GRI2.11 [1].

    Boundary conditions:
  • Inflow boundary:
    • Known inlet velocity
    • Known temperature
    • Known mass fractions of CH4, O2, and N2

  • Outflow boundary:
    • Communicates with the ambient
    • Pressure is 101325 Pa
