Nanocomposite is a multiphase solid material where
one of the phases has one, two or three dimensions of less than 100
nanometers (nm), or structures having nano-scale repeat distances between
the different phases that make up the material. Best example is bone.
Size of nanomaterial changes its properties. For examples: <5 nm for
catalytic activity, <20 nm for making a hard magnetic material soft, <50 nm
for refractive index changes, and <100 nm for achieving superparamagnetism,
mechanical strengthening or restricting matrix dislocation movement.
Nanocomposites are gaining huge importance in
recent times on account of characteristics such as high tensile strength,
better optical and magnetic properties, high resistance to corrosion, high
thermal and electronic conductivity. The market is expected to grow
significantly over the forecast period on account of its wide range of
applications including building & construction, automotives, electronics &
electrical, IT, energy and packaging.
