Chevron Braced Frame (CBF)
systems are one of the most efficient structural systems for
resisting laterals loads, however, non-ductile braces and their
buckling can seriously undermine their energy dissipation
capacity. A special CBF (SCBF) system has been developed which
not only uses ductile braces, but also provides additional
strength to supporting beams to resist additional forces in the
post-buckling range to ensure superior performance in terms of
stability of the system and energy dissipation potential.
Similarly, the Special Truss Moment Frame (STMF) system uses a
special segment for yielding under vertical shear providing a
suitable mechanism for energy dissipation during earthquakes.
Design provisions developed for these two systems are now part
of the US seismic codes. |
