Codes with commentary and
illustrative examples were developed for seismic evaluation and strengthening
and masonry including reinforced masonry. BIS is currently discussing the code
on seismic evaluation and strengthening, which provides a consistent method
using state-of-art practices which are suitable for a very diverse group of
buildings in our country. Reinforced masonry is not practiced in the country,
while it is far superior to unreinforced masonry and less sensitive to
construction quality of reinforced concrete. The code outlines its design and
construction features and is expected to make this typology a suitable
alternative for reinforced concrete, especially for low-rise structures in
seismic areas. |
